Wadley employs the latest technology available to diagnose breast cancer and offers comprehensive breast care services to the women of the Ark-La-Tex region, including:
Mammography
Breast Ultrasound
Ultrasound-guided needle biopsy
Stereotactic needle biopsy
Breast MRI
Sentinel lymph node mapping
A vital component of our arsenal of weapons to detect breast cancer is the Stereotactic Needle Biopsy and Mammotome System. This state-of-the-art technology provides a non-surgical approach to breast biopsy and is only available in the Texarkana area at Wadley Regional Medical Center.
The Mammotome breast biopsy is performed in less than one hour with an incision so small sutures are not required. The Mammotome is increasingly replacing open surgical biopsies, which can leave scarring and result in disfigurement of the breast. Following the core biopsy, a Band-Aid is applied to the biopsy site and the patient is released to normal activities.
Our newest technology to detect and stage breast cancer includes three new pieces of equipment that again are exclusive to Wadley Regional Medical Center. With funds raised through last year's Bringing Hope Home, a portable mammotome unit was purchased that allows the radiologist (Board Certified) to perform breast biopsies utilizing the ultrasound -guided needle approach.
The second new equipment addition is the MR Coil, a separate attachment that enables MRI studies of the breast to be performed. MR studies of the breast are especially beneficial when looking at a suspicious area in very dense breast tissue. The MR coil is also beneficial in treatment planning prior to surgery, for women who have a known breast cancer.
Additionally, the Neoprobe Gamma Detection device allows the surgeon to map the lymphatic system to determine if a patient has metastasis or spread of the breast cancer to the axillary lymph nodes, without surgically removing all of the nodes. This is accomplished in a less invasive fashion and with fewer complications to the patient.
All the proceeds from Bringing Hope Home this year will go directly toward the purchase of a latest-generation, digital mammography unit complete with an R2 Checker. The R2 checker is a computer-aided image reader that looks at the digital mammogram and points out any suspicious areas for the radiologist to study further. Since this newest technology has been introduced, statistics show a 20% increase in the diagnosis of breast cancer when using the R2 image checker.
Finding breast cancer ... early is still the commitment of Wadley Regional Medical Center. This new piece of imaging technology isn't cheap at $370,000, but saving lives is what it's all about.
Wadley Regional Medical Center has made a tremendous financial investment in the latest technology to detect and fight cancer. The technology described above is only available at Wadley in Texarkana.
